Abstrakt

Finite difference schemes are used to study flow patterns within closed rectangular (with a moving wall), open rectangular and triangular cavities and the heat transfer in rectangular cavities with and without uniform mass addition. The calculations are carried out for a range of Reynolds number based on cavity width of 0 to 104 for Pr = 0.7, 1.0 and 5.0. It is shown that the flow and heat transfer can be characterized by the Reynolds number and the nondimensional shear just upstream of the cavity.
