Abstrakt

A finite difference solution for the conduction heat transfer with phase change occurring adjacent to a cooled surface containing fins has been obtained. Four dimensionless parameters govern the temperature distribution and heat transfer for the case in which the phase change occurs uniformly at a single temperature and no initial superheating is present: a fin conduction parameter, a geometrical aspect ratio, a Stefan number, and the ratio of fin and PCM thermal diffusivities. Finite difference equations are formulated using an enthalpy method and are solved using an alternating-direction-implicit scheme. The results of the solution for suitable ranges of the governing parameters are examined in light of the enhancement of the freezing rate and heat transfer expected because of the highly conductive fin. Practical limits of the fin conduction parameter are developed for various aspect ratios.
