Abstrakt

The characteristic variation of the rate of heat transfer to and from a latent heat thermal energy storage capsule was investigated analytically and experimentally. Basic experiments were carried out to simulate a solar energy storage capsule, using a horizontal cylindrical capsule (750mm length, 48 O.D.) filled with naphthalene as the phase change material.
The natural convection within the liquid phase was observed, floating fine aluminum powder. In the heat storage process, the phase-front variation was closely interacted with the natural convection, although conduction was dominant in the heat removal process.
For the heat storage process, the finite difference calculations considering the natural convection effects well expressed the measured heat flux. The range of the Grashof Number in which natural convection became significant was also discussed by calculation.
