Abstract

By analyzing the membrane distillation process and thermoelectric refrigeration process, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the coupling of thermoelectric refrigeration process and membrane distillation process are obtained: First, the thermoelectric refrigerator needs to provide sufficient cooling capacity; secondly, there must be a high temperature difference between the cold chamber and the hot chamber. Previous experimental data of solar air-gap membrane distillation system as a basic data for coupling example calculation. The coupling characteristic parameters, coupling conditions and optimal coupling conditions are defined, and the coupling characteristic parameter equation is established. By solving the equations, it is found that not the lower the temperature of the cooling surface, the greater the flux of the membrane distillation, when the system uses thermoelectric refrigeration devices. For the selection of optimal coupling conditions, two criteria for maximum water production and optimal economy were proposed. Comparing the two criteria, it is found that only a few coupling conditions satisfy both criteria at the same time, and as the temperature of the feed liquid increases, the difference in the theoretical membrane distillation flux determined by the two criteria increases gradually in the fluctuations.
