Abstract

With the development of additive manufacture technology, it is possible to design and manufacture compact heat exchangers with complex structures. Inspired by the unique aerodynamic performance of the crescent dune, this paper aims to design a new compact heat exchanger with crescent dune fins. It also gives a parameterized modeling method for the crescent-shaped dune based on the description of elliptic paraboloid. By using numerical simulation, the flow and heat transfer characteristic are calculated and analyzed. In addition, under the same geometry and inlet conditions, different structures of the fin model like dune fins and traditional straight fins is established in this paper to make a comparison. The heat transfer performance such as pressure drop and temperature change along the flow direction between different structures and the influence of backflow vortex of the leeward slope are calculated and analyzed. As a result, the pressure drop of dune-shaped fin is reduced obviously compared with the traditional straight fins, and the temperature change per unit pressure drop is higher than that of the traditional fin. Then, a comprehensive comparison by adjusting the geometric parameters of dune fin is made in this paper to optimize the design. The research provides a guiding method for the design of new compact heat exchanger, which is of great significance in engineering field.
