Abstract

Unsteady natural convection flows in a differentially heated cavity with a conducting and an adiabatic fin are numerically investigated. The results show that the flow structures and temperature time series in the transition to a periodic flow induced by the fin vary with the fin height. Based on the current numerical results, the temporal development and spatial structures of the flows induced by the fin at different heights are described, and instabilities are characterized. It is found that the fin may improve the convective flows in the cavity and in turn enhance the heat transfer through the cavity in comparison with the case without a fin. The heat transfer through the cavity is dependent on the fin height.
