Abstract

The flow characteristic of heated water on a uniformly cooled plate in an open and constraint space have been experimentally conducted. An infrared thermal camera system is adopted to study temperature profiles used to analyze the fluid flow. The effect of the wall-liquid temperature difference and the liquid flow rate on the film width and the film area are studied. It is proven that the marangoni effect exists in a constraint space and has signi?cant in?uence on the ?ow pattern of falling ?lm. Compared to the falling film flow on the plate without sidewalls, the liquid mainly flows at the wall corner with sidewalls because of larger capillary force. The film adhere to the wall corner is thicker than that of the edge of the film. The falling film only expands by one side to the center of the channel. Two flow patterns as rivulet falling film flow and falling film flow with dry patches are observed in a constraint space. The width and the area of the falling film increase with the increasing wall-liquid temperature difference and liquid flow rate.
