Abstract

Photonic Crystals (PCs) were kind of artificial structures which consist of different dielectrics periodically, which are capable of controlling propagation of electromagnetic wave through photonic band gaps. On condition of laser ablation, the temperature is high and the radiative heat transfer is of great importance, the PCs with photonic band gaps are considered to be potentially a good thermal protection material. Thermal and electromagnetic modeling of a multi-layer PCs thermal protection structure for laser ablation is discussed. A one-dimensional three layers slab model is established and the temperature distribution of slab model were simulated for two situations, i.e., with PCs coating and without. Then, performance of the thermal protection coating under the condition of laser irritation is investigated. Finally, photonic band gaps of PCs are studied based on electromagnetic field theory. Transfer Matrix method is applied to study the impact factors of photonic band gaps for one-dimensional PCs, including periodic numbers, refractive index ratio, incident angle, medium thickness. Thermal and electromagnetic modeling shows deeper understanding of the thermal control mechanism of thermal protection structure for laser ablation.
