Abstract

With the aim to predict complex gas-liquid processes, three kernel models coupled into population balance method has been adapted to model sophisticated bubble coalescence and breakage behaviors from the selected experiments in the paper. In aid of our specified parameter, designed to depict coalescence and breakage rate, performance of these kernel models on ten typical flow conditions, in particularly included coalescence dominant conditions and breakage dominant conditions, are discussed. In general, predictions of Wu model and Hibiki model yield good agreement with experimental data at pressure drop dominant cases. However, Yao model perform comparative superiority in conditions of coalescence dominance. Nevertheless, there is an urgent need of advanced kernel model for capturing complicated bubble breakage phenomenon. The investigation of kernel models provides a straightforward orientation for development of coalescence and breakage models.
