Abstract

This study investigates the pressure drop characteristics of a horizontal tube-in-tube heat exchanger with a helical wire inserted in the inner tube. Tests were conducted with R22, R134a and R407C at an average saturation temperature of 40°C with mass fluxes ranging from 300 − 800 kg/m2s, and with vapour qualities ranging from 85% − 95% at condenser inlet to 5% − 15% at condenser outlet. Measurements were made for a helical wire-inserted tube with a pitch of 5 mm. It was found that R134a had the highest pressure drop and 407C had the lowest pressure drop. At low mass fluxes, it was noted that the pressure drops of R22 and R407C were very close.
