Abstract

A model aimed at describing liquid vapour phase change in a closed cavity is presented. The liquid phase is incompressible while the vapour phase is weakly compressible. A low Mach number approximation is used for the vapour allowing for the filtering of the acoustic waves. The conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy are solved for the liquid and vapour phases. The interface representation is performed using a front tracking method. A 1D spherical validation case is presented consisting of a vapour bubble contained in a cavity partially filled with saturated liquid. The cavity wall is suddenly heated leading to a vaporization process at the liquid vapour interface and therefore to a pressure increase in the cavity. The liquid-vapour system follows part of the saturation curve. The heat transfer mechanism is analysed and unveils some specific features resulting from compressibility effects in the vapour phase.
