Abstract

This paper studies the turbulence-induced heat transfer in a pebble bed reactor core where the flow paths are highly complicated due to the randomly distributed fuel spheres. For the investigation of turbulence model performance in curvilinear geometry, Existing statistical turbulence models including an LES were compared through an experiment. The k-ω model among RANS models showed the best agreement among the statistical models and this was applied to pebble bed simulation for comparison with LES. In pebble bed simulation, random structure of spherical pebbles was simplified as two types of close-packed geometries, i.e., BCC and FCC systems. Non-uniform local hot spots might be created on the fuel surfaces in BCC geometry, while relatively regular distribution could be found in FCC geometry.
