Abstract

In this work we solve the inverse problem of identifying the thermophysical properties of semi-transparent materials as a parameter estimation approach. A coupled radiation-conduction three-dimensional formulation in Cartesian coordinates is used to model the heat transfer problem within the material. Both the conduction and the radiation problems are solved with finite-volumes. The sensitivity coefficients and the determinant of the information matrix are examined for the experimental design. A two-step estimation approach is proposed, based on a hybrid minimization method and on surrogate models for the direct problem and for the gradient of the objective function. The results obtained with such an approach are compared to those obtained with the Levenberg-Marquardt method of minimization of the least-squares norm and with the Gauss method of minimization of the maximum a posteriori objective function.
