Abstract

A two level procedure for heat exchanger network synthesis (HENS) problem is presented. The master problem, related to structural optimization, is carried out by a simulated annealing (SA) procedure. For each generated network, the operating conditions (temperatures and split rates) are optimized by a nonlinear programming (NLP) package in order to minimize the total annual cost. Particular attention is devoted to structural assumption reduction (possibility of different utility levels or different types of heat exchangers is allowed for example) and to the size reduction of the NLP problem. As a result, the proposed procedure can easily handle large scale problem (44 streams) with different structural constraints.
