NATURAL CONVECTION IN A DISCRETELY HEATED OPEN TOP CAVITY
Abstract
The problem of natural convection inside a vertical open
top, closed bottom cavity has been numerically investigated. A discrete flush-mounted heat source which is located in the middle of one of the vertical walls initiates the buoyancy driven flow inside the cavity. Heat conduction in vertical walls is also included in the numerical model. The specific parameters of interest in the work presented here are Rayleigh number Ra*, and aspect ratio λ. The aspect ratio is found to
have significant effects on heat transfer performance of the heat source. However, these effects become marginal for increasing Ra* and the cavity width beyond certain values.
