Abstract

The pool nucleate boiling curve of a simulated chip in saturated FC-72 at atmospheric pressure was divided into different boiling subregimes based on the slope changes and visual observations made at different heat fluxes. Next, hot wire anemometry was used in order to gain insight into the fine structure of the vapor flow throughout the nucleate boiling regime. The void fraction data obtained made it possible to suggest flow patterns for each boiling subregime, especially in the vicinity of the CHF, where the main focus lies. In addition, the analysis of the hot wire signals allowed for the identification of the role played by vapor coalescence as the heat flux is increased. Inferences were then made regarding the likely CHF triggering mechanisms, based on the trends observed in the boiling-curve and hot-wire data.
