Abstract

The momentum, heat, and mass transfer inside of a vertical reflux condenser was studied. A numerical model used to simulate the condenser was developed in order to satisfy the governing equations. The flow patterns that developed inside the condenser were sensitive to the gas loading and power level, corresponding to the relative contribution of buoyancy and inertial forces and expressed by the nondimensional parameters Gr and Re respectively. High Gr flows were found to exhibit increasingly unstable behavior. Isncreasing Re flows were found to promote higher frequency oscillations. The resulting flow and stability phenomena were found to have a significant impact on the heat and mass transfer.
