Abstract

This work is concerned with the analytical solution of transient laminar forced convection inside ducts resulting from an arbitrarily varying inlet temperature. A combination of the generalized integral transform and classical Laplace transform techniques are used to develop approximate explicit solutions, which yield quite accurate results, specially for the quasi-steady response at larger times. Particular consideration is then given to transients governed by periodic inlet temperature disturbances in the form of square, sinusoidal, and triangular waves. Numerical results for bulk temperatures time histories under these representative periodic disturbances are critically compared, at selected axial positions along the channel's length.
