THE EFFECT OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ON DROP SIZE IN ANNULAR FLOW

Abstract

The effect of surface tension on the drop size and deposition mass transfer coefficient in vertical annular flow has been studied. Data was obtained for the upflow, of an air/1,1,1 trichloroethane system, in a 10.26 mm internal diameter tube held at a pressure of 1.5 bar and ambient temperature.

Reductions in surface tension show: (a) Increases in liquid entrainment. (b) Reductions in drop size. (c) Reductions in the deposition mass transfer coefficient and (d) increases in the fraction of drops that deposit by a diffusion like mechanism.

The change in drop size, subsequent to complete film removal, was also studied. This showed the preferential deposition of small drops and an increase in the quantity of entrained liquid at the large drop sizes.
