Abstract

This paper deals with studies carried out on two methods of reduction of natural convection in a vertical annuLus open to a hot fluid at bottom. Both the methods studied, namely; (1) reducing the annular gap and (2) introduction of baffles have been found to be effective. Experiments have been carried out covering a range of RayLeigh numbers from lO×lO7 to 60×l07 for the narrow annuLus and 4×l06 to 2.5×l07 for the annulus with baffLes. For the annulus with baffLes correlations have been developed from the experimental data for the effective thermal conductivity Conduction analysis based on the concept of effective thermal conductivity has been found to predict the measured temperatures closely. Flow patterns obtained using aluminium particles as tracer are also presented in the paper.
