TAYLOR−GOERTLER VORTICES AND THEIR EFFECT ON HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

Abstract

New measurements show, that in technical flows the linear stability theory allows no prediction on the existence of longitudinal vortices on concave plates in parallel flow. Therefore, additional stability diagrams are required. On the concave plate investigated, stable laminar boundary layers can be obtained. By inducing well defined longitudinal vortices, precise informations can be derived on the influence of longitudinal vortices on local and integral heat and mass transfer. Longitudinal vortices can lead to an improvement of 80%, but also to a reduction of 5% behind the investigated grids depending on the wavelength and the intensity of the disturbance. Longitudinal vortices are not the reason for the turbulence-caused strong improvements in heat and mass transfer. High turbulence leads to damping and destruc-tion of longitudinal vortices.
