Abstract

The thermal and flow resistance characteristics of the shell-side of multi-start helically-coiled tube exchangers have been determined mainly by the performance of tests on complete geometrical models. Angular sectors of the latter can be simulated by rigs consisting of layers of straight tubes the axes of which are either inclined or cross-inclined to the rig axis. This paper presents the theory for comparing the characteristics of cross-inclined tube banks with those of multi-start helically-coiled exchangers. The published results for a wide range of banks and helically-coiled exchangers are reviewed and compared. It is concluded that cross-inclined banks can be used to model the thermal and flow resistance characteristics of multi-start helically-coiled exchangers.
