HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER ON SWEPTBACK CIRCULAR CYLINDERS IN SUPERSONIC FLOW

Abstract

This paper presents the main data obtained from a comprehensive study of heat and mass transfer from swept circular cylinders in a Mach 2.42 wind tunnel, the Reynolds number referred to cylinder diameter being 100,000.
Recovery temperatures have been obtained by extrapolation from measurements on hollow plexiglas cylinders in which vacuum is maintained. Heat transfer coefficients and effective temperatures have been calculated from steady-state wall temperatures on electrically heated cylinders.
As regards heat transfer coefficients, comparison with infinite cylinder theories shows good agreement for a laminar or a turbulent boundary layer.
The mass transfer investigated was sublimation of paradichlorobenzene. An analogy between Sherwood and Nusselt numbers was noted. Also, on the sublimate cylinders, there were grooves produced by vortices directed along the streamlines, in the laminar as well as in the turbulent boundary layer.
