CROSS FLOW HEAT EXCHANGE THROUGH BUNDLES OF FLUOROCARBON RESIN TUBES

Abstract

Heat exchangers with flexible fluorocarbon resin tubes were increased in size and improved in efficiency to accomodate large-scale installations associated with sulfuric acid plants and the metal-treating industry. Instead of handling the corrosive liquids tubeside, they were passed over the outside of the small- diameter tubing in cross flow. The film coefficients of the viscous liquids were improved substantially while pressure losses were greatly reduced. Passage of low-viscosity water or steam through relatively long tubing was accomplished with low pressure drops and high film coefficients. Higher capacity heat exchangers resulted from the ability to use longer tubes and achieve higher heat transfer coefficients.
