Abstract

An assessment is given of three engineering methods of predicting windward meridian heat transfer to cones at angle of attack in hypersonic laminar flow. The semi-empirical method of Heins and Estes is shown to be superior to the yawed cylinder and effective cone methods, on the basis of comparisons with measured data for a wide range of cone angle, Mach number, and angle of attack. Empirical methods of predicting leeward meridian heat transfer, as well as peripheral variation from windward to leeward, are also presented.
