Abstract

Various experiments are described which show that the rate of heat conduction of a porous building is greatly reduced when the air required for ventilation is filtered through the surfaces of the building. A reduction of rate of heat conduction is shown to occur when the filtration of air is outwards, that is, in the same direction as the flow of heat, as well as when the filtration is inwards, that is, in the direction opposite to the flow of heat. Most of the experiments were made on 2.5 m cubical chambers, and an apparatus was devised to make comparative tests on 50 cm × 50 cm panels.
