Abstract

An alternative method to calculate mass/ scalar transport in simple turbulent shear flows is presented. The method is based on the solution of the transport equation for the joint probability density function (pdf) of the species. It is solved by partitioning the equation into a "fluid mechanical" and a "mixing" part. A simple model is proposed for the transport of the pdf, while a Monte Carlo method is used to simulate "mixing" of the species and hence, further modified the pdf. The calculations give the probability distributions of the species directly. Therefore, the statistics of the species' fluctuations can be determined. Results of the first four moments of the pdf are in good agreement with measurements of mass transport in non-reactive turbulent shear flows with variable density. Good agreement is also obtained with turbulent diffusion flame measurements assuming chemical equilibrium.
