Abstract

Dephlegmation (countercurrent condensation), implemented e.g. in a coiled tubular heat exchanger, has three functions: Partial condensation of a vapor, rectification and simultaneous vapor-liquid separation. Dephlegmators are used in chemical plants at the top of distillation columns or standing alone, replacing for instance a small column. Advantages, limits of application, economic aspects and the design procedure are considered. The design procedure of coiled tubular dephlegmators can be split up into four main steps: Tray-to-tray calculation for required mass transfer, design of heat exchanger, entrainment and actual mass transfer in the tube bundle. Finally, more general design methods are discussed.
