TEMPERATURE DISTRIBUTION AND HEAT TRANSFER IN A TRANSITIONAL SEPARATED SHEAR LATER
Abstract
An interferometric study of the heat transfer across a transitional separated shear layer under a subsonic air flow is described. The flow geometry is a rearward-facing step. Two regimes of flow are observed for the separated shear layer: "upstream" transition and "downstream" transition. While the latter is akin to a laminar separated shear layer, the former is characterized by high rates of heat transfer. Furthermore in upstream transition, the average Stanton number in the separated region is found to significantly exceed the corresponding attached flow value, and increases with the Reynolds number.
